Things that made me happy yesterday

1) While Shawn tried fishing a little on the Missouri River, Tyler and I went for a walk.  We (I) hiked up to the top of the dam, and got my heart rate up and had my legs burning.  Unexpected exercise!

2) We found that the ground was bare over there, and much more fun to walk around in than the snow at home.

3)  I stumbled across the candy cigarettes I had stashed away for a rainy (snowy) day.  I found it hilarious for some reason.

4)  While shawn warmed up his freezing hands in the truck, Tyler continually made me laugh.  What a ham.  (Good thing they are only candy, and I didn't buy more than one pack :)

Mmmm...breakfast
Made with eggs from our chickens, spinach frozen from the garden, and homemade bread (plus a little brie courtesy of the grocery store).  We eat like kings here sometimes.

These two went out and moved snow for a while this weekend.

then Tyler did some off-roading with his matchbox cars and play-dough.  (there has been extra drool around here lately, maybe from his molars coming in ?)

My Chickies

Back in October it seemed like a great idea to get a head start on chicken-raising by ordering chicks early.  Another girl and I put in an order together and decided a December delivery would work great.
A few days after Christmas, when the temperature was in the 10s and 20s, they arrived at the Post Office, all of them surviving the 2 days shipping from Iowa.
One of 5 new chicks
It has worked out well so far, even though we've had some severely cold temperatures.  The other option of waiting until March (when the feed stores have chicks for sale) just set us back so many months.  Now, we'll have hens ready to lay in the summer when the grasshoppers are at their highest population, instead of them being ready to lay in late September.  Hopefully they keep growing and stay as healthy as they are now!
They are Aracuana variety, also known as the "Easter Egg layers" for their colorful eggs!

Winter

Even though it is only January, our weather hasn't been the best for outside activities.  Tyler is so bored he begged to learn how to vaccum.

I got Daffodil bulbs in a gift exchange and they are decorating my windows.

Outside temp: 8 degrees.  Inside Greenhouse temp:  32.  Only because the sun was out.

The horses are well-insulated.  The snow sticks on their backs instead of melting.

At the Brewery

We visited Jess and Jason this weekend.  On New Years Eve, we attempted to walk around downtown but most stores were closed.  So we headed into a Brewery and had a beer.

Tyler was content playing shuffleboard and would have stayed there all night I think.
